Madhya Pradesh is a diverse country with tremendous diversity in habitats all along. The state is rich in forest wealth, wetlands and open country. This accords an ideal habitat to Indian birds and winter migrants.
Though many birding spots have been yet unexplored the tiger reserves offer the bird watching opportunity in Central India. The wildlife refuge have more than two hundred fifty birds species found in each.
The tiger reserves are home to mainly forest birds while wetlands, large lakes in Madhya Pradesh towns and cities are suitable habitats for water birds of which most are migrants Of many birds lesser florican is seen at wildlife sanctuary in Ratlam while Bar headed and Grey lag geese are seen at Lake in Madhav National Park at Shivpuri.

The most visible birds in tiger reserves are eagles like crested serpent and crested hawk eagles, orioles, Shama, honey buzzard and white eyed buzzard, greater racket tailed drongo, Asian paradise flycatcher, Malabar pied hornbill, Alexandrine Parakeet, green munia and avadavat,  warblers, mynas, minivets and chloropsis to name a few.  
The wetland birds abound one can see lesser whistling teals, Northern pintails, ferruginous pochard (Jabalpur), Nakta, Spot billed duck, common pochard, common teal, gargeny or blue winged teal, Eurasian wigeon, red crested pochard and more.

In wildlife sanctuaries like Nauradehi spotted creeper can be sighted along with painted storks and in Pachmarhi the Malabar whistling thrush. White browed bulbul and Indian pitta along with vast variety of birds can be seen in Jabalpur.
For bird watching tours Indian wildlife refuge as Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench National Park offer the best opportunity. The best time for watching birds in Madhya Pradesh is winters whence the arrival visiting birds takes place.
